WinteringOver

The Nova Tuskhut Library at the Velaslavasay Panorama holds a collection of rare, ordinary, scientific, literary, and Polar-related books to read while wintering over extended periods of time inside the Nova Tuskhut, the only Arctic Trading Post in the Lower 48 States. This series is a glimpse inside those humble texts.

Translation: The King himself opened the collection with pomp and splendor. Heavy storm clouds still hung over Europe, Germany remained strong, the first German Offensive in 1918 was halted, but one stood on the threshold of the other, yes, it had just begun, and the same fear sat in our body as we well over 25 years later felt during the Ardennes offensive in 1944-45.

BY FAR the greater part of the land surface of the globe is covered by snow and ice during a part of each year and over vast tracts of it they exist perpetually. Snow and ice therefore are geological factors of great importance whose work is deserving of careful attention and study. The only difference between snow and ice is that the former consists of loose, freely grown crystals of water, whereas in the latter the crystals form a compact mass; they are consequently to be considered together, especially as it is the ice that is the agent of importance.
