Tropicália tells the story of the rich artistic and cultural movement born in the late 1960s in Brazil. From a collective of like-minded souls, ‘tropicália’ used music, poetry, theatre, and avant-garde visual art to confront the political establishment. The artists involved took sonic cues from traditional Brazilian music, psychedelic rock, and African rhythms, and was led by the likes of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes and Tom Zé. The tropicalist movement had a big impact and held great presence in Brazilian television, press and radio.   Presented in collaboration with Radio Afrique and Mr. Bongo Records (UK).

In this event, ten poet-performers will take on the movies by writing scripts that re-tell scenes from seven feature films, using them to repackage aspects of the history of our continent. Sometimes called "movie telling", "neo-benshi" or glossed as performance art, the seven pieces presented will take scenes from different feature films and layer them with comic, critical, or poetic interpretations, all relating in some way to the history, or alternate history, of North America. Neelanjana Banerjee, Robin Sukhadia, Jen Hofer, Douglas Kearney, Nicole McJamerson, Janice Lee, Tatiana Luboviski-Acosta, Jen Nellis,  Konrad Steiner, and Jackie Wang will perform live in The Cinema Cabaret.
