All spirits arise for Dia de los Muertos!

Free Street Festival ~ November 2, 2018 from 6 to 10 P.M.

As part of the 24th Street Theatre's 12th annual Dia de los Muertos Festival, the Velaslavasay Panorama will open its doors to the most celebratory spirits with the Nova Tuskhut, theater and garden hosting various audio auras and vaporous visuals. Join us in honoring the dead on 24th Street between Hoover and Magnolia with foods, crafts, altars and performances. With your creative and artistic help, the Velaslavasay staff will conjure the reanimation of the most exquisite corpses through the medium of markers and popsicle sticks!

We will be joined by Forest Casey and Leslie Williams of Magnolia Tintype Co., who will demonstrate a photographic process from the 1850s, developing images on aluminum that take five minutes to create and will last for 300 years. Forest is a professional photographer, capturing cars, characters and convenings for various editorial and commercial media, and has acted as the primary documentarian of VP events for years. See more of his work here.

And at any particular hour, the playful spirits of the late Bob Baker's famous marionettes may make a presence. Before they're sold out, grab a ticket to one of their final performances at the historical Bob Baker Theatre by November 23rd, after which they will move to a new space, rennovated according to Bob Baker's original plans! Read more about the sweet future on their website.

This celebration and all performances are free of charge, like the liberated spirits of those who have passed. Please see our website for any updates.

And none of this would be possible without the tradition initiated by our neighbor across the street, the 24th Street Theatre! For the past 20 years, the theatre has, on top of producing plays, held free after school arts programs and critically engaging bilingual events and productions. Their upcoming production will be La Vispera ("The Eve"), a product of workshops in which neighborhood residents tell their immigration stories with the collaboration of professional theatre artists.

The participation of the Velaslavasay Panorama in this event is made possible in part by a grant from the city of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs.
