The Queen of the Animated Screen & Other Techniques

June 14, 2023

Film-In-Residence: Max Fleischer
Saturday, June 3rd, 10th & 24th, 2023
$10 General Admission / $5 VPES Members

Inventor of the rotoscope, Polish-American animator Max Fleischer (1883 - 1972) and his production studios created iconic animations with characters like Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Felix the Cat, Popeye, and Superman.

In June, Fim-In-Residence will showcase a selection of Fleischer’s rare, silent-era animations like the newly restored from original camera negative Koko's Clock (1927) with live accompaniment from Mista Ragtime (aka John Reed-Torres) followed by a selection of talkies like Betty Boop's - Betty In Blunderland (1934), Popeye's - A Day To Skate (1938), short documentaries like Lunch on a Cart (1925), ‘Screen Song’ cartoons and more.

Presented in partnership with Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored (Jane Fleischer Reid & Mauricio Alvarado). This event and exhibition are sponsored in part by the Velaslavasay Panorama Enthusiast Society, by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the California Arts Council, a state agency.

This Fair June Day, the 16th, 1904 - Bloomsday

Friday June 16th, 2023, 11:00am - 5:00pm

Entry included with General Admission Ticket.

It is she, Martha, thou lost one, Millicent, the young, the dear, the radiant. How serene does she now arise, a queen among the Pleiades, in the penultimate antelucan hour, shod in sandals of bright gold, coifed with a veil of what do you call it gossamer. It floats, it flows about her starborn flesh and loose it streams, emerald, sapphire, mauve and heliotrope, sustained on currents of the cold interstellar wind, winding, coiling, simply swirling, writhing in the skies a mysterious writing till, after a myriad metamorphoses of symbol, it blazes, Alpha, a ruby and triangled sign upon the forehead of Taurus.
In recognition of Bloomsday, the day that spans the breadth of James Joyce's 1922 novel Ulysses, we hold a reading of the text during regular open hours. Explore the panoramic exhibits, tour the garden, bring your favorite copy of the text and join in on the reading.
