Widely considered and contested as the first feature-length documentary, this film follows the life of an Inuk man, Nanook, and his family as they go about their life in the Canadian Arctic - hunting seals, harpooning walruses, and constructing igloos. However, in reality the film blurs lines between fact and fiction to create a different genre of filmmaking - the assisted documentary, or docudrama. As Roger Ebert (who gave the film four stars) puts it:"The movie is an authentic documentary showing the creation of itself. What happens on the screen is real, no matter what happened behind it."

The Idea of North
US, 1995, 14 min., B&W, 16mm Projection
Directed by Rebecca Baron (In Attendance)
Screening of this film sponsored by Paula Wilson

Explores historic and contemporary ways of knowing the North Pole through images and media. According to the Chicago Reader, the film is a "black-and-white evocation of a failed 1987 arctic expedition. Focusing on a few photos shot by the crew of a downed balloon before their demise, Baron intercuts shots of a mirror reflecting the sun and of hands scraping at snow. These and other present-day images, more artfully composed than the 1897 photographs, movingly represent her--and our--inevitably incomplete understanding of the past through the diary excerpts we hear and see." www.rebeccabaron.com

Untitled (Ross Ice Shelf Antarctica)
Antarctica, 2005, 4.5 min., Digital Projection
Directed by Connie Samaras
Screening of this film sponsored by DORA

A video installation from the 2005 project V.A.L.I.S. (vast active living intelligence system), a series of works made at the South Pole and Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. The videos featured in the project "are a reconfiguration of the premise of human exclusivity found in mainstream nature documentaries and of the heroic and technological transcendence inherent in sci-fi horror films." --Connie Samaras, www.conniesamaras.com

The Velaslavasay Polar Promulgation Panel Presents

POLAR PANORAMIC SUGAR EGGS

polarpanoramicdebut

...a lost Easter craft from the Victorian Era. Hand molded, piped, and sculpted in sugar by artist Kate Clark, each egg holds a peephole that opens onto a secret interior scene. Much like the quickly dissolving landscapes of the arctic and antarctic, these  vignettes offer views of quickly dissolving icy worlds, represented in sugary miniature.  Created as part of the Velaslavasay Panorama Polar Year, these limited-edition souvenirs will be on view in the lobby area of the Velaslavasay Panorama from March 20th onwards, during our open hours {Friday, Saturday and Sunday,12-6pm} and are also available for purchase.
