Sixth Annual Bob Baker Day Carnival

A free all-day celebration at Los Angeles State Historic Park

Saturday, February 29, 2020 - 10:00am to 5:00pm

Join the Velaslavasay Panorama at the Sixth Annual Bob Baker Day, a free all-day celebration of Bob Baker's magnificent marionette legacy in Los Angeles, California.

For the sixth annual Bob Baker Day, featuring puppet shows, live music, crafts, games & food, the Velaslavasay Panorama is partnering with OneHouse ArtExperience Museum of San Gabriel to present a table-top paper train workshop and station-to-station art exhibition in the fields of the State Historic Park. Using collage, found images, paint pens and different kinds of train templates and fasteners we will construct a fantastical collaborative train.  We encourage everyone to join us in making an ideally equipped train for taking a time-travelling journey to Northeast China, 100 years ago. Stationmasters will be on hand to assist in coupling our long train together beside the train tracks just south of Chinatown throughout the course of the festival.

Saturday, February 29th (Leap Day), 2020

Bob Baker, an American pioneer in the art of puppetry, created the Bob Baker Marionette Theatre (1963-2018) in Downtown Los Angeles, formerly located at 1345 West 1st Street, near the intersection of Beverly Blvd, 1st Street and Glendale Blvd. The building, by an unknown architect, was built as a scene shop/workshop for Academy Award-winning special effects artist M.B. Paul.  In 1961, Bob Baker and Alton Wood purchased the property for use as a live puppet theater and permanent showcase for hand-crafted marionettes (Los Angeles Department of City Planning Recommendation Report, 2009). In 2019, Bob Baker Marionette Theatre relocated to 4949 York Blvd, in the Highland Park neighborhood. Bob Baker Day celebrates the endurance, vitality, rejuvenation and iconic imagination of the Bob Baker Marionette Theatre.
