Yuwen (played by Wei Wei) narrates the circular nature of her life in a small town in the Jiangnan region. The film, which will be screened outdoors with limited seating, is in Mandarin with English subtitles. Doors will open at 8pm, and the movie will begin at 8:30. We meet a couple, a loveless squire and his wife. Their marriage is rotting away from disinterest and distrust when a doctor arrives to treat the husband, and discovers a coincidence that is heartening and foreboding in the same instant:  he was the wife’s first love, her true love, never forgotten. The spaces of the film are strewn with debris, austere and disturbing places with a Tarkovskian dread clinging to them. “I simply don’t know how to live in the future,” says the wife...   - Kevin Jack Hagopian

CELEBRATING TWO YEARS OF SHENGJING PANORAMA

Realized through the collaboration of the Velaslavasay Panorama with panorama painters in Shenyang, China—Li Wu, Yan Yang & Zhou Fuxian—Shengjing Panorama debuted in Los Angeles at the Velaslavasay Panorama on June 1, 2019  as the first ever USA<>China 360-degree painted panorama since the invention of the medium in the late 18th Century.

Since then the content, context, themes, and history of Shengjing Panorama have brought new interpretations to light. Time has regrettably marked the passing of one of the painters, Li Wu. Li Wu was a master of panoramic painting. A Professor in the Large Format Painting Department of Luxun Academy of Art in Shenyang, China, he worked on over 20 panoramas throughout the course of his life and Shengjing Panorama is the only one on view outside of China.

The experience of Shengjing Panorama can be summed up by the words of filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke: "Nothing happens really, but at the same time, a lot has happened."
