Arctic Spectacles: The Frozen North in Visual Culture 1818-1875
Russell A. Potter

The Velaslavasay Panorama was pleased to host Professor Russell Potter in two evenings of Arctic Novelty, January 4th and 5th 2008, in celebration of this splendid book, which examines the fascination of the nineteenth-century imagination with all things Arctic. Russell A. Potter has written and lectured extensively on the Polar Regions and the many different aspects of its recorded history. In April of 2004, he traveled to the remote corners of the Canadian Arctic for the filming of the NOVA program Arctic Passage: Prisoners of the Ice to revisit several of the sites where traces of the ill-fated Franklin expedition of 1845 can still be found.

With many illustrations and a variety of period plates reproduced from original sources including examples from Dr. Potter's own extensive collection.

University of Washington Press, paperback, 2007, 258 pages.
