Grand Unveiling and Oktoberfest-in-July Alpine Spectacular!

Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 7:00pm to 10:00pm

A momentous time of celebration, this evening will be the first that our new major panoramic wonder will be presented to the public.  Entitled Effulgence of the North, this 360-degrees meditation on glacial extremes creates a curious sense of immersion through sight, sound and sculpture.  Created by a small collective of artists and technicians (Moritz Fehr, Asami Morita, among others), Effulgence of the North blends 19th century illusionism with present-day technology to create a psychological terrain of the elusive Frozen North.   We joyously welcome one and all to toast this frigid achievement with us at our Grand Unveiling ceremony.  Join us and be one of the first courageous viewers to gain new insights into the icy tip-top of the world, while enjoying the Bavarian camaraderie offered by our Alpine Spectacular and Oktoberfest-in-July!

This special event will feature an illustrated presentation by renowned author, media archivist, and UCLA Professor Erkki Huhtamo focusing on the most successful moving panorama of all time - Albert Smith's Ascent of Mont Blanc, which was performed at London's Egyptian Hall no less than 2000 times in the 1850s!  Furthering the evening's decidedly Alpine atmosphere, there will be entertainment showcasing the soaring yodeling talents of Tony Hartenstein, the famed Swiss performer and accordionist of the 1939 New York World's Fair.   Outside in the gardens, Automata presents Janie Geiser's live projections Stolen Archives of the Vanished Ice-World, performed by Laurie O'Brien, Janie Geiser, and other surprise guests. The Velaslavasay Panorama invites all to come and celebrate!
